Stratolaunch completes more than 10 Talon-A hypersonic flights

Stratolaunch has completed more than 10 hypersonic flights with its reusable, fully autonomous Talon-A testbed, a milestone the company says turns high-speed flight testing from a rare event into a repeatable service.

The Talon-A is air-launched from Stratolaunch’s carrier aircraft and can exceed Mach 5, flying with no onboard crew from release to recovery. After each high-speed run it lands on a conventional runway for refurbishment and reuse, which the company says cuts the turnaround time and cost of each mission.

Stratolaunch describes Talon-A as the first reusable, fully autonomous air-launched hypersonic aircraft. The vehicle’s maiden hypersonic flight in December 2024 was the first by a reusable hypersonic-capable aircraft in the USA since 1968, according to coverage.

Each flight has been conducted with no human in the loop, from release through to landing. Multiple missions have used the same vehicle, which Stratolaunch says validates its approach to rapid refurbishment and redeployment.

The flights gathered data on aerodynamics, propulsion, thermal protection and flight controls, feeding customer research and development. Talon-A also supports a range of payloads and mission profiles, from sensor validation to advanced materials testing.

Stratolaunch now operates two carrier aircraft – the Roc and the modified Boeing 747-400 Spirit of Mojave – alongside two Talon-A vehicles. The Spirit of Mojave completed a refurbishment and integration effort to support the Talon program and now functions as an operational launch platform.

Traditional hypersonic testing is costly and infrequent, and Stratolaunch says its reusable, autonomous approach lowers the cost per experiment while opening the field to more organizations. The two-carrier fleet, it adds, lets customers book routine, on-demand flights rather than waiting for scarce test opportunities.

Customers include government and commercial organizations, among them the US Test Resource Management Center’s Multi-Service Advanced Capability Hypersonics Test Bed (MACH-TB) program.

Zachary Krevor, CEO and president of Stratolaunch, said, “Reaching more than ten successful hypersonic flights with Talon-A is a testament to our team’s dedication and the robustness of our technology. We are transforming hypersonic testing from a rare event into a routine service, empowering our customers to innovate at unprecedented speed.”

The company plans to raise its flight cadence and expand launch range operations while developing next-generation hypersonic vehicles. It is also seeking partnerships with defense, aerospace and research organizations worldwide.
