REL’s greener TAM panel for fluorescent NDT inspection

A TAM panel is a widely used known-defect standard that provides a reliable and standardized method to maintain inspection accuracy. This known-defect standard is the frontline defense against system degradation and drift. Processing the TAM panel under the same conditions as production parts is meant to ensure that operational and procedural parameters, chemicals, lighting and equipment are functioning correctly before inspecting safety-critical production parts.

The US Department of War (DoW) recently adopted a policy to minimize hexavalent chromium processing because of its environmental toxicity and deleterious effects on human health. This policy shift prompted a mandate for a product made to exacting quality metrics, on time, every time, in the most environmentally responsible manner. The REL TAM Panel is plated with a process and material that maximizes product durability and process repeatability, while minimizing human health effects and environmental contamination.

The intimately bonded electroplated layer over the food-grade 316 stainless steel substrate is then precisely heat-treated and processed with exacting diamond tooling and state-of-the-art measurement techniques to produce the REL TAM Panel. The product’s durability is verified by environmental testing followed by rigorous NIST-traceable measurements to ensure that the controlled, specified indications can survive industrial conditions. The REL TAM Panel plating is designed to comply with RoHS, REACH, WEEE, ELV and Proposition 65. It is approved to Pratt & Whitney TAM146040 (polished/mirror finish and grit-blasted), certified to GE Aerospace Process Specification P3TF47 and approved to Rolls-Royce RRP58003. The REL TAM Panel also meets the requirements of ASTM E1417, MIL-STD-6866, TO 33B-1-1, NAVAIR 01-1A-16-1 and TM 1-1500-335-23.
