GKN Aerospace has revealed an uncrewed aerial vehicle demonstrator developed for the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration, after developing in less than a year.
The program began with a contract from the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) in November 2025, which set an 18-month target for delivering a clean-sheet uncrewed aerial vehicle (UAV) demonstrator and a dedicated turbojet engine. The project work covers the airframe, the propulsion system and the onboard systems.
Development draws on propulsion, aerostructures and systems integration experience and knowledge from GKN Aerospace operations in Sweden, the Netherlands and the UK.
Joakim Andersson, president of engines at GKN Aerospace, said, “One year ago, this was an idea and an ambition. Today, we are unveiling the first tangible result of that work. That achievement reflects close collaboration with FMV, the Swedish Armed Forces and the combined expertise of teams across GKN Aerospace.”
The UAV has been developed as a flexible platform for testing and evaluation to support work on future uncrewed aviation technologies. According to GKN Aerospace, the program is also intended to build experience in how complex aerospace systems can be developed, integrated and manufactured on accelerated timelines.
The clean-sheet approach is intended to support rapid capability development and scalable production, said the company.
Development and testing activities will continue as the program moves into its next phase, which includes preparations for flight testing. The work builds on existing collaboration between GKN Aerospace, FMV and the Swedish Armed Forces.
The first public display took the form of a full-scale mock-up shown alongside the turbojet engine being developed for the aircraft. It was presented at The Armed Forces Air Venture 2026 at Malmen Air Base in Linköping, Sweden, an event forming part of centenary celebrations for the Swedish Air Force.
