Open-Source SDK for AI-based test automation

dSPACE is expanding its test automation SDK is expanding its portfolio with a software development kit (SDK) to simplify automated test execution in Python in software-in-the-loop (SIL) and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) environments.

The SDK allows development and validation teams to create test cases entirely in Python and execute them in both SIL and HIL setups. Users benefit from automated, end-to-end AI-supported test workflows. The further development of the SDK will be open‑source and enable users and partners to actively help shape the solution.

End-to-end, code-based test automation is at the heart of the solution. Instead of working with different tools and interfaces, users describe their tests as easy to understand Python scripts. An abstracted programming interface ensures that the same tests can be reused in different test environments. Switching from tests on SIL simulation platforms such as dSPACE VEOS to HIL tests on systems such as dSPACE SCALEXIO is done exclusively via the configuration – the test logic itself remains unchanged.

The Test Automation SDK can be integrated seamlessly into existing development workflows. It supports established Python test frameworks such as pytest and Robot Framework and can be integrated into common development environments and tool chains such as Visual Studio Code and Git. This allows software developers and test engineers to work with the tools they are already familiar with from their day-to-day development work and efficiently master complex test setups.

Another advantage of the SDK is its openness for future automation methods. As tests are formulated in the widely used Python programming language and complex APIs are abstracted, the Test Automation SDK is particularly suitable for AI-supported test generation and test extension. Common AI coding assistants can support developers in the creation and maintenance of tests and thus further reduce the effort required for test development.

The Test Automation SDK is aimed at developers in industries in which SIL and HIL tests play a central role. These include the automotive industry, commercial vehicle and off-highway applications, agriculture, aerospace, and defense. Wherever complex electronic and software-based systems need to be reliably validated, the SDK supports more efficient, consistent, and future-proof test automation.

Interested users and partners who would like to actively participate in the further development of the open‑source‑based solution can already contact dSPACE via the website Test Automation SDK – dSPACE.
