Researchers from Swansea University in Wales and Airbus Defense and Space are partnering on R&D that explores how simulation technologies can help develop and test cybersecurity measures early in an aircraft’s development.
The project is the first of its kind to explore how specific aspects of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) can be applied during the early design stage to enhance system resilience in aerospace proactively. It will also develop tools to strengthen aerospace systems against cyberattack.
Part of the Endeavr Wales joint venture, the project also involves Wales-based consultants Novel Engineering.
Researchers will create new ways to test and verify cybersecurity measures in system architectures and develop techniques to anticipate and prevent cyber threats before they affect aerospace operations. The project will also establish industry guidelines for integrating cybersecurity at the design stage, develop standards and develop frameworks to safeguard emerging technologies.
Swansea University, Airbus Endeavr Wales, and Novel said they aim to embed these innovations across the sector and share their findings to help strengthen the aerospace industry’s cyber resilience.
Professor Siraj Shaikh, head of the systems security group at Swansea University’s department of computer science and lead for the project said, “This project aims to enhance aerospace cybersecurity by strengthening resilience and protecting infrastructure from cyber threats. It also creates valuable opportunities for job creation and skills development, equipping researchers and engineers with advanced cybersecurity expertise to support industry growth.”
Ian Thomas, technical lead at Novel said, “By combining our expertise in model-based engineering with Swansea University’s world-class research in systems security, we’re creating new tools and practices that can integrate cybersecurity at the heart of aerospace and improve performance in the industry.”
Nick Crew, Airbus Endeavr Wales’ operations officer said, “We are looking forward to collaborating with the well-recognised experts in the area of cybersecurity and systems engineering from Swansea University and Novel to provide increased operational effective cybersecurity in our industry.”
The project follows the announcement of £5 million of funding for cybersecurity research for aviation earlier in the year by Airbus and Cardiff University, Wales.
