Insight: In support of the flight test failure

Most flight test engineers know this meeting – someone stands and points to a date on a slide, a date promised to investors, the press, or an international event committee, and the room is told this milestone will make or break the company. And everyone on the test team, quietly, is doing the same arithmetic – counting the test cards that still stand between here and that date.

I have sat in that meeting in different companies and on different continents, and though the details change, the pressure does not. It rarely comes from the physics, which is the easier and more honest part of our work. It comes from funding runways, from certification timelines, and from the optimism of people who have bet everything on a program succeeding. None of these forces are wrong. Programs require believers, and money runs out on real calendars. But none of them appear in the telemetry.

Which is why the most useful thing a flight test team owns is not its instrumentation or its aircraft, but the discipline of telling the truth about the data, especially when the truth is inconvenient. The data does not negotiate, and cares nothing for the date on the slide. A team anchored to it carries both compass and shield. The compass points to the next test point. The shield is the answer to the question of if a milestone is achievable. It’s not an opinion, nor a feeling about morale, but a number, a trend, a margin.

What holds out best under pressure though, is cultural achievement rather than an individual one. Culture is built, in no small part, by what a team chooses to celebrate.

Most programs celebrate the obvious wins – the first flight, the first transition, the first crewed sortie. But if those are the only wins a team celebrates, it teaches a dangerous lesson – that finding problems is failure. Consider the engineer who catches an anomaly in ground test, or whose review halts a flight, or who says “not today” while the cameras are waiting. That engineer has just delivered the most valuable result flight test can produce. A team that treats that moment as a setback will hesitate when it comes again. A team that treats it as a save will not.

So, celebrate the catch. Celebrate the NO-GO call that later proved right, and the test point that cleared clean because someone insisted on the unglamorous build-up first. Celebrate the young engineer who spoke up in the control room even though his voice shook.

These wins never make the press release, yet they are the ones that keep aircraft, reputations and eventually customers intact.

Sometimes the win is harder still to see. If the funding ends and the doors close there is no first flight photograph to frame. Even then, something endures.

The data is honest, our integrity is intact, and that too is a win and deserves to be named as one.

The milestone will pass, one way or the other, and the date on the slide will become a memory. What remains is whether the team can still trust its own answers, and who endures are the engineers that learn a good catch is a good day and carry that understanding to whatever they test next.
