Mi-171E helicopter begins flight tests

Flight testing of Russian Helicopters’ improved Mi-171E helicopter, which has an upgraded power unit and rotor system, has started at the Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant, Buryatia, Russia.

The upgraded version of the multipurpose helicopter is equipped with a new rotor and X-shaped tail rotor blades made from polymer composite materials, an upgraded swash plate, and a Russian-made VK-2500PS-03 engine with a FADEC-type digital control system, together with a modified stabilizer and keel beam. The company said that the economic efficiency of the helicopter has been enhanced by recent innovations.

The flight tests are scheduled to be completed by the end of the year, said Russian Helicopters, which is part of the Rostec State Corporation.

Leonid Belykh, managing director of the Ulan-Ude plant said, “Equipping the Mi-171E helicopter with a new carrier system enables an increased maximum speed, flight range and external sling payload, and makes flights at high altitudes and temperatures more reliable.

“The new form of tail blades and main rotor makes it possible to reduce the noise level significantly. We hope that the modernized helicopter will appeal to both traditional buyers and new clients.”

The VK-2500PS-03 engines use a digital control system which adapts to external conditions. The use of the engine control system enables a reduction in the weight and volume of the electronics and cables used in the helicopter and ensures synchronization of the engine by turbocharger rotation frequency. It also enables optimum engine performance with minimal fuel consumption.

The auxiliary power unit, a Safir 5K/G MI, provides greater fuel economy with a powerful 20kW generator.
