The Aerospace Corporation has started building a R&D facility for space warfare in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

A small ceremony was held last month  with local government members and leadership from US Space Command and the recently-formed US Space Force.

The R&D center will deliver technical expertise across the space enterprise to outpace threats to national security said the Aerospace Corporation. The building’s digital engineering environment will enable high-fidelity analysis and physics-based modeling and simulations as well as development of tactics, techniques, and procedures that will provide insight into space warfighting.

Steve Isakowitz, the Aerospace Corporation’s president and CEO said, “This new facility will be a gamechanger for technical and simulation capabilities for the space warfighters as they shape the future of national security space.

“As the nation’s trusted partner, Aerospace focuses on solving our government and industry partners’ most challenging problems. It is our job to help them promote and optimize the combined civil, military, and commercial exploitation of space to best serve our national interests.”

Once complete, the US$100 million, three-story, 90,000 square foot building will connect to Aerospace Corporation’s existing building at the site. It was designed to accommodate up to 200 employees. Construction of the building is expected to start from mid-November and to be completed during spring 2022. Full operations at the center are planned to begin during the summer of 2022.

Jay Santee, the Aerospace Corporation’s vice president for Space Systems Operations and site executive for Colorado Springs said “We’re pleased to grow our role as a trusted technical partner to our government partners and industry colleagues in the Greater Colorado Springs defense and space community.

“Our new facility will boost Aerospace’s local economic impact by 75% and add 200 technical jobs locally.”

The new space warfare center at Colorado Springs expands the organisation’s current site, which employs around 240 engineers, scientists and analysts working primarily for thecorporation’s Defense Systems Group’s Strategic Space Operations division and for its national engineering technology hub, the Engineering and Technology Group.

The Aerospace Corporation is nonprofit corporation that runs federally-funded research and development projects. It employs around 4,000 at sites in El Segundo, California, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Washington DC and at Colorado Springs.
