Vision Research has released the Phantom KT-series, a new family of high-performance cameras delivering precision at extreme rates. Developed with a research-driven approach grounded in European Machine Vision Association 1288 standards, the cameras deliver superior image capability allowing accurate and detailed capture of fast-moving subjects in a lightweight, portable form factor.
Available in monochrome and color, the 1-megapixel and 4.2-megapixel cameras leverage back side illuminated sensors for superior low-light performance. Their high frame rates and nanosecond exposure times provide precise measurements that enhance safety, compliance and operational efficiency.
Models include the 1-megapixel KT 1610, KT 1210 and KT 810, and the 4.2-megapixel KT 1640 and KT 1240. The cameras are built around state-of-the-art back side illuminated sensor architecture, which sustains image throughput up to 16 gigapixels per second.
This enables maximum pixel resolution at the camera’s highest frame rates. The Quantum Efficiency reaches 88% and an Absolute Sensitivity Threshold of 24 electrons offers reliable imaging at sub-microsecond exposures or when there is limited light.
“All research and measurements follow European Machine Vision Association 1288 standards, ensuring transparency and performance accuracy,” according to Vision Research. The standard characterizes industrial camera sensor performance using a scientific approach and defines a consistent method to assess image performance among different cameras.
The 1-megapixel cameras offer a 190-nanosecond export-controlled fast option to minimize motion blur for ballistics and precise high-velocity measurements. The 4.2-megapixel KT 1640 and KT 1240 deliver improved edge clarity and wider tracking for motion analysis.
These capabilities make the cameras suitable for applications including industrial testing, ballistics and range work, biomedical research, three-dimensional object tracking, particle image velocimetry, digital image correlation, and high-speed microscopy. The cameras are small and lightweight, weighing 7.1lb (3.2kg) and have a 5in x 5in (12.7cm x 12.7cm) screen.
The cameras are engineered for portability and efficient setup. They support CF-Express Type B, Serial Digital Interface and High-Definition Multimedia Interface video outputs and include a wheel-style control interface for an untethered workflow. Access to three programmable input/output enables control of signals for precision synchronization and triggering.
The cameras provide up to 15,640 frames per second at full 1-megapixel and 916,660fps with export-controlled fast option at reduced resolutions. They provide up to 3,750fps at full 4.2-megapixel and 421,000fps at reduced resolutions. Peak Quantum Efficiency reaches over 88% with interchangeable lens mounts and CF-Express compatibility.
Binned mode provides resolution flexibility at the highest frame rates. Extreme Dynamic Range provides bright flash mitigation with reported measurements using the European Machine Vision Association 1288 4.0 standard.
