Vertical Aerospace is growing its existing Test Team in preparation for an exciting novel aircraft development programme. Part of this expansion is to bring in a passionate and driven Flight Test Engineer to take ownership of all things flight test. Ultimately responsible for creating an EASA recognised Flight Test Organisation when required by the business.

The successful candidate will be the key focal point in the company for defining the flight test strategy for our experimental/development and certification aircraft. The ideal candidate will have strong theoretical and practical experience, with an aptitude of pragmatic problem solving. The working environment will be rewarding, dynamic and always challenging. The pace will be different from ‘traditional’ aerospace.

Responsibilities

Your duties will be wide-ranging and varied and will include:

  • Define the Flight Test strategy on a novel aircraft design
  • Plan, prepare for and lead flight test activities
  • Work closely with other departments within the company, principally Flight Controls, Flight Physics, Simulation and Certification
  • Maintain a close working relationship with the company’s test pilots
  • Perform risk assessments and provide recommendations/solutions
  • Assist with other tasks within the Test Team as required (planning, test definitions, vehicle operations, operating tests)
  • Be actively involved with the recruitment of the growing team
  • Mentoring and sharing knowledge with others in the company

Basic Qualifications / Experience

  • Be educated to degree level or higher in Engineering, Physics, or equivalent
  • Have 5+ year demonstrable experience as a Flight Test Engineer, ideally within a fast paced and novel programme
  • Have experience working with multiple types of air vehicle, ideally including rotorcraft, multirotors and UAVs
  • An intricate understanding of aircraft systems, flight physics and a desire to learn more
  • Excellent computer skills – proficiency with day-to-day applications used for email, word processing, etc, as well as data analysis experience using MATLAB, Python, or similar
  • Skills understanding complex datasets and making sense of a complex system’s performance
  • Must be able to work both independently and in a team and when required to travel and work extended hours
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with colleagues across a wide range of technical disciplines
  • Be fluent in spoken and written English language

Preferred Qualifications/Experience

  • Experience working with external regulators/airworthiness bodies such as the CAA, EASA, FAA, MAA. Compliance Verification Engineer (CVE) experience favorable
  • Flight Test Engineer Class A / CAT 1, Empire Test Pilots’ school
  • Experience with GS Works / Curtiss Wright FTI equipment
  • Be a pilot or have piloting experience
  • Be able to demonstrate a commitment to professional development
